For $68,940 USD, plus a $1,895 destination fee, The 2023 Ram 2500 HD Rebel is the latest foray into the off-road truck market. For the money, it’s more cost-effective than a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ZR2, and Ford F-150 Raptor, while offering more size, and most of the content found on the hulking Ram HD Power Wagon.

It might look like a Power Wagon, but Ram insists it’s not. For example, a Ram HD Rebel can be equipped with a Cummins I6 turbo diesel engine pushing out 370 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque paired with a six-speed automatic. A Power Wagon does not offer the Cummins at the moment. But like its bigger brother, the Rebel features a standard 6.4L Hemi V8 with 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque paired to a ZF 8-speed. Like the Power Wagon, the 392 cubic-inch Hemi V8 also can come with a 12,000-pound winch up front. The Cummins option doesn’t offer this pairing.

As for the chassis, the 2023 Ram HD Rebel features a unique five-link coil suspension, with an available rear air suspension system. Controlling the power to the wheels is a rear limited-slip differential with an electronic locker, along with protective underbody skid plates. The new truck also features 20-inch wheels wrapped around 33-inch off-road tires. 18-inch wheels will be available late in the model year. The inside can be had with a cloth bench seat, too, before moving up into more premium furnishings and helpful technologies like a 360-degree camera and blind spot monitoring systems.

So, with Power Wagon looks, a Cummins diesel, and a lower price, what’s the point of keeping both the Ram HD Rebel and Power Wagon trim around? Simply put: 35-inch tires and a front locking differential. Both of those high-budget off-road accoutrements are not found on the Ram HD Rebel where they are on the Power Wagon.

The 2023 Ram HD Rebel will be at dealers later this year. Options and additional pricing is also TBA.
